Studia linguistica romanica publishes two or three issues per year, which can be either regular issues or thematic issues. A thematic issue focuses on a specific research topic. The journal publishes thematic issues resulting from conferences, seminars and workshops, but not conference proceedings in the strict sense of the term.

At any time, the journal accepts proposals for thematic issues. The proposal (by email to the journal) should contain the subject/title, the names of the issue editors, the relevant scientific event, the relevance for Romance linguistics and the journal, the names of the authors, the titles and abstracts (1000 characters) of the articles, and a provisional schedule. If the proposal is accepted, the journal establishes, in consultation with the issue editors, a publication schedule.

The submission of the articles takes place in two stages:
1. In the first stage (internal review), the authors send their articles to the issue editors, who review them, suggest improvements regarding the content, the style in the language of writing and the formatting or, possibly, reject an article. At the end of this stage, the issue editors send to the journal a list of the articles they have confirmed, along with the names and email addresses of two proposed reviewers for each article.
2. In the second stage (external review), each author submits their revised and confirmed article to the journal. The submission is carried out in the same way as for regular issue articles, that is, through the online submission platform. The author must submit an anonymous version (and remove his/her name from the document and its properties), in ODT format, formatted according to the style sheet instructions.

During the evaluation, the journal takes into account the proposals of the issue editors, but reserves the final decision on the choice of reviewers. The journal regularly informs the issue editors about the review progress (without revealing the identity of the reviewers). The decision on the final acceptance of the articles is made by the journal.

Upon acceptance, the journal sends to the issue editors the latest versions of the articles for another round of revision and formatting. From that point on, authors must no longer upload new versions of their articles to the platform. The issue editors email the revised and formatted articles back to the journal, accompanied by a list with the sequence of articles for the table of contents of the thematic issue. At the same time, the editors write the introduction to the thematic issue. The introduction must also be submitted through the online submission platform, but it must not be anonymous and does not undergo external review.

The journal handles the final revision, formatting and layout and prepares the articles for publication. Prior to publication, the authors receive the proofs of their articles, which they must correct and return within the deadline indicated by the journal.
